Santorini or Thira for the Greeks is located
in the southwest of the Cyclades Islands cluster
it is located 120 nautical miles south of the harbor of Piraeus (Athens) and 63 nautical miles
north of Crete. We refer to Santorini as one, but actually is complex of five islands. Santorini
(Thira) is the main island and around it Thirasia and Aspronisi (parts of the ancient Stroggili)
and the two volcanic islands Palea Kameni and Nea Kameni.
The island of Santorini was called Strongili is ancient times, meaning "circular" in Greek because
of the shape of the island. But with the eruption of the Santorini's volcano in 1500 BC, the shape
of the island changed.
Santorini was named by the Venetians in the 13th century because of a small church
which was located at the northwest part of the island Saint Irene, but this is one
of many names given over time to this island with the catacylismic history and
also on that island there is also a controversial link of the Santorini island with
the legend of the lost Atlantis
